The Three Surface Failures People All Call Pilling

Pilling, fuzzing and matting are three separate faults with three separate grades, and only one of them is the balls everybody blames.

Two people wait at the same bus stop in navy crew neck jumpers. Same colour, same shape, roughly the same price. One reads as a considered outfit and the other reads as a jumper on its last winter, and nothing about the second is dirty, stretched, or holed. The difference sits entirely on the surface, at a scale of about a millimetre.

What people call pilling is really three separate things happening to a fabric face. Textile laboratories separate them, grade them apart, and have a published scheme for doing it. Once you can tell them apart on a pavement, you can also tell them apart on a rail before you buy.

One word covering three different failures

The definitions come from ISO 12945-4, first published in October 2020, which is the part of the series that covers visual assessment. A pill is fibres entangled into a ball that stands proud of the fabric and is dense enough that light will not pass through it, so it casts a shadow. That last clause is the whole reason pilling is visible from across a street.

Fuzzing is different. It is surface fibres roughed up or teased out of the cloth, producing a hairy layer with no balls in it. From two metres away it reads as a soft halo that dulls the colour and blurs the edge of a shoulder seam.

Matting is different again, and it only happens to fabrics with a raised nap. The standing fibres lose their common direction, so a fleece or a brushed wool goes patchy and flat, usually first where a bag has ridden.

The machine that ages a jumper in an afternoon

Fabrics get there by a route anybody can picture. A circular specimen is clamped and rubbed against an abradant in a looping figure that keeps changing direction. One cycle of that motion is sixteen rubs, and the machine stops at agreed stages so somebody can look: often 125, then 500, then 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 7,000.

The stages matter more than the total. Pills form, and then they get knocked off, so a knit that looks poor at 2,000 rubs can look tidier at 7,000 because the surface has been stripped rather than saved. A single grade quoted with no stage attached is close to meaningless, which is why the method in ISO 12945-2 requires the number of rubs to be reported alongside it.

Grades describe change, not condition

Each of the three failures gets its own five point grade, and five means no change at all. For pilling, four is partially formed pills, three is moderate pilling across part of the face, two is distinct pilling over a large proportion of it, and one is pills of varying size covering the whole surface. Fuzzing and matting run on the same scale from slight to dense.

The instruction that reframes everything sits just below those tables. Every grade except five refers to a change from the original state, not to how the fabric looks in absolute terms. A brushed lambswool that was designed hairy can score well while a smooth worsted that shifts slightly scores worse, because the worsted moved further from where it started.

That is exactly what you are reading at the bus stop. You are not judging whether a surface is fuzzy. You are judging whether it looks like it was meant to be that way.

Why the light on the street is harsher than the shop

The assessment conditions in the standard are unexpectedly specific, and they explain a lot about where garments look bad. The work happens in a darkened room. The light is artificial daylight at a brightness of at least 600 lux, positioned at an angle of five to fifteen degrees to the plane of the fabric, with the observer's eye between 30 and 50 centimetres away.

Low raking light and a dark surround is a shadow finding setup. Since a pill is defined by the shadow it casts, that geometry makes the fault as visible as it can possibly be. It is also, almost exactly, a late afternoon street in autumn with the sun low behind the buildings. Fitting room lighting comes from overhead, flat and close to the fabric plane, which is the arrangement least likely to show you what you are buying.

The standard also refuses to trust one pair of eyes. More than one observer should grade each specimen, and if two disagree by a whole grade they look again. If they still disagree, the report carries both figures. An industry that writes that rule down knows how subjective the judgement is.

Why strong fibres keep their pills

There is a cruel piece of physics behind which jumpers age badly. A pill only stays on the surface while the fibres anchoring it are strong enough to hold it there. Weak fibres snap and the ball drops off, so the fabric sheds and moves on.

Add a tough synthetic to a soft natural yarn, which mills do constantly to add strength and cut cost, and the anchoring fibres stop breaking. The pills stay. A wool blended with nylon can survive far more wear while looking considerably worse for most of it, and a pure cashmere that pills heavily in its first month often settles down afterwards, because the loose short fibres have already gone.

This is why price predicts appearance so poorly. Both jumpers at the bus stop may last five years. Only one of them will look like it deserves to.

Reading a knit before it reaches the street

Surface behaviour is partly visible in a shop if you know which questions the fabric answers.

Keeping a winter knit looking deliberate

Maintenance decides more than fibre content does. A comb or a battery shaver over the friction zones once a month, before anything reaches the shadow casting stage, keeps a fourth season jumper looking like its first. Waiting until the surface is dense means removing enough material to leave the knit visibly thinner.

Wash less, and inside out when you do, because most surface damage happens in the machine rather than on your body. Then be honest about the three failures when you buy. A knit will change, that change is measurable, and the question is whether the version that arrives in month six is one you still want to be seen in.
