Turn a watch over and you will find a number: 30 M, 5 ATM, 100 M. It reads like permission. Fifty metres sounds like more water than anyone meets on a normal day, so a shower feels trivial and a swim feels well inside the margin. That assumption sends a steady stream of watches to repair benches every summer.
The gap is not marketing dishonesty. The figure comes from a laboratory test with a very specific shape, and almost nothing about it resembles what happens when a person gets into water.
Why the number is not a diving depth
Ten metres of still water sits on a surface at one bar of pressure, and that conversion is written into the standard itself. So a watch marked 100 M has been held against roughly ten bar. The trouble is that the pressure a case sees in real use is not the pressure of standing water. Swinging an arm through a pool, letting a tap run onto the crown, or diving in from the side all produce brief spikes far above the static figure, and the seal only has to lose once.
Temperature does its own damage. Rubber gaskets expand and contract, and a hot shower followed by a cold rinse moves them twice in a few minutes. The standard has a test for exactly that, which tells you the writers knew it was a common failure and not an exotic one.
The standard that replaced a 1990 rule
The document behind the marking is ISO 22810:2010, titled Horology, Water-resistant watches, published in its first edition in August 2010 by Technical Committee ISO/TC 114 on horology and its subcommittee on water-resistant watches. It cancelled and replaced ISO 2281:1990, which had been technically revised. The British Standards Institution publishes it as BS ISO 22810:2010 and lists the scope in full on its catalogue page: requirements, test methods, and the marking a manufacturer is authorised to apply.
One line in that scope explains most of the confusion. Divers' watches, described as such, are not covered here at all. They sit under a separate standard, which is why a watch sold for swimming and a watch sold for diving can both carry a three-digit number and mean different things by it.
Four immersion tests, none of them swimming
The tests are short enough to hold in your head. The watch is fully immersed and taken to a minimum overpressure of two bar over a minute, held there ten minutes, then brought back down. Separately it is put ten centimetres under water for at least an hour. Then a five newton force is applied sideways to the crown and push-pieces while it sits ten centimetres deep for five minutes. Finally it goes through water at forty degrees, twenty degrees, and forty degrees again, five minutes each, with under a minute between dunks.
The pass mark is not a volume of water kept out. It is the absence of condensation inside the glass, revealed by warming the watch on a plate at forty to forty-five degrees, laying a drop of water or a damp pad on the crystal, and wiping it clear after about a minute. Fog inside means a fail. Nothing in that sequence involves an arm moving, a wave, or a bottle of shampoo.
The standard is also candid about its own role. It sets out the tests to apply in the event of a dispute and leaves the manufacturer responsible for whatever testing happens on the production line. It also puts the manufacturer in charge of stating whether a given activity falls within a particular watch's field of use. That clause is the one to carry into a shop, because the answer to whether you can swim in this watch is written by the brand, not by the number.
What the Commission handed to the standards bodies
American regulators used to run their own version of this. The Federal Trade Commission kept Guides for the Watch Industry at 16 CFR part 245, and those guides warned industry members off the word waterproof. When the Commission asked whether that warning still held up, the responses lined up behind it. The Swiss federation replied that proof implies a level of absolute protection which does not exist for watches, and Timex said it knew of no watch on which immersion had no effect at any depth or duration.
The Commission then rescinded the guides outright, effective 9 June 1999, and published its reasoning in the Federal Register at 64 FR 30898. Its conclusion was that international standards already gave the industry enough direction, and that technical bodies were better placed than a regulator to keep tests current. Sellers still have to substantiate objective claims under section 5 of the FTC Act. What vanished was the rulebook telling brands exactly how to phrase it.
Gaskets age on a wrist that never gets wet
A rating describes a case on the day it left the factory. Seals are consumable. The gasket at the case back takes a set from being compressed, the one behind the crown wears every time the crown is pulled, and both harden with heat and with the oils and soap that collect around them. A five-year-old watch that has never been near a pool can seal less well than a new one rated lower.
Screw-down crowns add a second failure mode, which is the owner. A crown left a quarter turn open after setting the date looks normal and removes the rating entirely. It is the most common way a well-built watch drowns.

Reading a case back against your own week
Buy against the wettest thing you do regularly, not the wettest thing you can imagine. Most people need rain, a sink, and the odd downpour, and a modest rating covers all three.
- Ask the seller to point to the brand's own statement about swimming and hot water. If nobody can find one, treat the watch as rain-only whatever the case back says.
- Feel the crown. One that screws down to a firm stop is a different proposition from a push-pull crown on the same rating.
- Check whether the brand quotes a pressure test as part of a service. A seal that cannot be renewed affordably is a rating with an expiry date.
- Look at the case back fixing. A screwed back holds pressure better than one pressed into place.
- Keep any watch under a hundred metres out of hot showers, since the temperature swing works the seals harder than depth does.
- Rinse in fresh water after chlorine or salt, dry the case, and never operate the crown while the watch is still wet.
One habit that keeps a rating honest
Pick a single moment in your week and make it the seal check. Push or screw the crown fully home, look through the crystal at an angle under a lamp for any haze, and glance at the seam where the case back meets the case for grit. Thirty seconds, and it catches the two things that actually sink watches.
Then, once every couple of years on anything you swim in, have a shop run a pressure test before the summer rather than after a failure. It costs a fraction of a movement service and it turns the case back number from a hopeful memory of the factory into something current. A rating is a claim about a sealed object at one point in time, and the only person keeping it true afterwards is the one wearing it.
