The Winter Boot Rating That Tests Grip on Real Ice

A Toronto lab tilts an icy floor under real walkers, and two out of three winter boots cannot hold the angle of a curb ramp.

The first properly icy morning sorts a street into two groups. One set of people walks normally. The other adopts the short, flat-footed shuffle that means the sole underneath is doing nothing at all. Both groups usually paid similar money for boots that looked equally serious in the shop. The gap between them is not balance or nerve. It is a measurable property of the outsole that almost nothing on the box will tell you about.

Grip on ice is the one winter performance claim that is easy to test and almost never tested in front of a shopper. A Toronto laboratory has been testing it on human feet since the middle of the last decade, and the published results are unkind to most of what goes on a shop wall in October.

The bench test that never touched a foot

The long-standing method for rating slip resistance drags a weighted, rubber-clad foot form across a surface and reports a coefficient of friction. It is quick, repeatable, and cheap, which is how it became the default. It also involves no person, no stride, and in most versions no ice.

That gap is on the record. In a 2016 paper in the journal Ergonomics, Jennifer Hsu and colleagues at Toronto Rehab put human walkers up against the mechanical approach and reported that standard bench tests for footwear slip resistance do not adequately reflect how footwear actually performs on winter surfaces. Eight participants walked six styles of winter footwear on wet ice, on dry ice, and on dry ice reached after crossing soft snow, and which boot came out ahead shifted with the surface underfoot.

Their replacement is blunt. Put a person on an ice-covered floor, tilt the floor, and keep tilting until the foot goes. The steepest angle a walker manages before slipping becomes the score, and the team named it the maximum achievable angle. It measures the thing a pedestrian actually needs to know, which is whether a ramp, a driveway, or a cambered pavement is walkable in the boots you own.

Seven degrees and a curb ramp in Ontario

The method now runs as a public program. KITE at University Health Network publishes its results as Rate My Treads, and the scale is a count of snowflakes rather than a friction figure. Each pair is walked on cold ice and on wet ice, uphill and downhill, by four participants wearing safety harnesses, and the published score is the lowest angle recorded across all of those conditions rather than the flattering one.

One snowflake takes seven degrees. That threshold was not picked for neatness: the program chose it because it matches the accessibility guidance in Ontario for the slope of a curb ramp. A boot below seven degrees is a boot that cannot be trusted to carry you up a ramp built to code. Eleven degrees earns two snowflakes, and fifteen earns three.

What the tally says about most boots on sale

The failure rate is the part to carry into a shop. The program's own count puts it at 67 percent of the footwear it has tested. Two pairs in three, plenty of them expensive, cannot hold the angle of a code-compliant curb ramp on ice.

The ceiling is modest too. The category winners in the program's 2025 rankings score eleven and twelve degrees, which is two snowflakes. Nothing on that list has reached three. Ten years of pressure from the testing side has moved the best of the market from almost nothing to roughly two thirds of the way up a scale most shoppers have never heard of.

None of that difference is visible from the outside. Tread depth, shaft height, weight, price, and how convincing a boot looks in a mirror are all poor proxies for the score, which is why the guesses people make on a shop floor go wrong so reliably.

Reading a sole before you know the score

Most boots are not on any tested list, so you are stuck reading the sole yourself. A few things do carry information.

Styling around a boot you can actually walk in

Boots that hold on ice tend to be visually heavy. Thick sole, rounded toe, a shaft that adds width right at the calf. That is a proportion problem, and proportion problems have solutions. Buying something sleek and slippery instead is not one of them.

Two silhouettes work. Narrow the leg above the boot with a straight or slim trouser that stops at the ankle, tucked into the shaft or skimming it, so the boot reads as a deliberate block at the bottom of a clean line. Or go fully wide and let a long hem cover the boot almost completely, which turns the sole into the base of a column instead of a separate object sitting under one.

The version that fails is the middle. A trouser too wide to sit inside the shaft and too narrow to hide it stacks two bulky shapes at the ankle and shortens the leg from the knee down. Colour helps at the margins: a boot close in tone to the hem keeps the line going, while one that answers the coat pulls attention up.

A cold-week plan that starts with the ground

Work in this order before the first freeze. Check the tested list for anything in your size and category, since a rated pair removes the guesswork entirely. If nothing there suits you, buy for a cold-flexible compound and broad flat contact rather than for tread drama, and ignore the marketing words on the swing tag. Keep slip-on grips in the bag you carry daily, because the worst mornings are the ones you did not dress for.

Then plan one trouser shape around the boot rather than the other way round, and check it in a mirror at home while you still have time to change either half. Retire the pair when the outsole edges have gone round, usually after about three hard winters, and treat that as replacement rather than as a failure of care. A boot that lets you walk normally on an icy street is doing more for how you look than any detail above the knee.
