Summer racks hold two kinds of light clothing that look identical from three feet away. One is thin because the yarn is fine and the gaps between threads are wide. The other is thin in weight but tightly built, with almost nothing open between those threads. Under shop lighting you cannot tell them apart by eye, and a small tag printed with a number is often the only thing separating them.
That number is an Ultraviolet Protection Factor rating, and it describes how much ultraviolet light the cloth stops rather than how cool the garment will feel. It is a fabric measurement, not a promise about your afternoon. Reading it well is mostly a shopping skill, because nearly everything the rating reflects gets decided by weight, weave, dye, and fit long before the tag is printed.
Where the number on a hangtag comes from
The rating works as a ratio. A fabric rated 50 lets through roughly one fiftieth of the ultraviolet radiation that would otherwise reach bare skin, and one rated 15 lets through about a fifteenth. Labels sold in the United States follow an ASTM standard, D6603, which runs the scale from 15 at the bottom to 50+ at the top and sorts readings into named bands. A fabric that measures under 15 is not supposed to carry a rating at all.
The scale pairs with the UV Index, the daily forecast figure for ultraviolet strength published by the Environmental Protection Agency, which follows World Health Organization reporting guidance and runs from 1 up past 8. You can see the bands at the EPA. Reading both is a two-part habit: the index says how hard the sun is working today, and the fabric rating says what your outer layer does about it.

Weight and weave beat the color story
Marketing prefers to talk about special fibers, but the mechanism is dull and physical. Ultraviolet light travels through the holes between yarns, so the fewer and smaller those holes, the less gets past. A 2014 study of cotton knits in The Scientific World Journal, run at the Institute of Textiles and Clothing in Hong Kong, tested ten yarns across fifteen knitted structures and found fabric weight explained more than eighty-eight percent of the variation in protection. Thickness and stitch density mattered much less than the weight of the cloth.
Color pulls in the same direction. Deeper shades absorb more ultraviolet than pale ones of identical construction, which is why a navy overshirt outperforms the same shirt cut in white. That runs against the summer instinct to buy everything in cream, and it does not make pale clothes useless. It means a pale piece has to earn its place on density instead, through a tighter weave or a heavier cloth.
What stretch and water do to the rating
Two ordinary things quietly lower what a garment delivers. Stretching a knit pulls the loops open and widens the gaps between yarns, so a fitted piece pulled tight across the shoulders measures lower than the same fabric hanging loose. This is one of the few places in dressing where a relaxed cut does more work than a close one.
Water attacks from the other side. A wet cotton shirt can shed a large share of its blocking ability, with reported losses around half for ordinary cotton, because water fills the spaces between fibers and lets more light through. A shirt pulled on straight out of the sea is doing far less than the dry version of itself, which is the practical argument for carrying a dedicated cover-up rather than relying on a soaked t-shirt.
What fifty washes did in one 2023 test
Protection also has a shelf life, and how long it lasts depends on how the garment earned its rating. A 2023 study in the journal Cureus put commercially sold sun-protective clothing through routine laundering and measured the ratings again afterward. Two of the brands tested lost between seventy and seventy-eight percent of their value after fifty wash cycles, while five others held roughly steady across the same run. The split followed the method. Garments relying on a chemical ultraviolet finish degraded as that finish washed away. Garments that got their protection from fiber content and construction kept it, because there was nothing to rinse out. For a shopper this is a preference rather than a rule: a densely built piece in a deep shade will still be working three summers from now, while a thin one treated at the factory may not.
A hangtag audit before you pay
Most of this can be checked on the shop floor in under a minute.
- Bunch a section of fabric and hold it toward a window. The more you see through the bunched cloth, the more sun passes through the flat cloth.
- Read the fiber content sitting next to the number. A garment describing a dense construction is a different purchase from one describing a treatment or an applied finish.
- Pull the fabric gently across your hand. If the gaps open visibly under light tension, buy it a size loose or expect less from it.
- Check the cut, not only the cloth. A high collar, a full sleeve, and a hem that clears the hip cover ground no rating can make up for.
- Ignore any claim below 15, since the labeling scale does not start under that figure and anything lower is a sales line rather than a measurement.
- Compare a pale piece against a darker one in the same fabric and expect the darker one to measure better.
None of that needs a meter. The bunch-and-light test is crude, and it still separates a gauze shirt from a tight poplin faster than any tag copy will.
Building a cover-up you will actually carry
The best summer layer is the one that ends up in the bag. A long-sleeved overshirt in a dense, mid-toned cotton, cut loose enough to sit away from the skin, covers shoulders and forearms without a sticky moment, and it folds down small enough to forget about. That is a styling decision as much as a technical one, because a stiff high-rated jacket left at home protects nothing at all.
Pair it with a habit that costs nothing: check the day's index before you dress, the way you already check for rain. On a quiet morning any light layer will do. On a strong one, reach for the denser piece, the deeper shade, and the longer sleeve, and let the tag confirm what the cloth already told your hand.
